Visit our House in Unspoilt Pelion
Posted:5 April 2019
Jutting out into the Pagasitic Gulf midway between Athens and Thessaloniki, Pelion is a wonderfully unspoilt part of Greece, boasting lush mountain scenery, traditional stone villages, deserted beaches and a magical atmosphere. Legend has it that the Greek gods left Mount Olympus and went to Pelion for their summer holidays – however, we’ve yet to see a Centaur frolicking in the olive groves!
For us, being in Pelion feeds the soul…
We have a stone house in the middle of a traditional hillside Pelion village with beautiful views down the hills to the sea. We, friends and family, spend several weeks there but we also rent it out. The village Metochi is well known for its clean air and fresh water from the village spring. The wild flowers in the orchards and olive groves are wonderful
We have renovated the house in a simple but comfortable style. There is a large open sitting/dining/kitchen area upstairs with stunning views over the hills and the Pagasitic Gulf, with a large wood burner for cooler times of the year.
The house sleeps 4 – with two bedrooms on the ground floor: one room en suite with a double bed, and one twin bedded room, en suite. Upstairs there is a “day bed”, for relaxing in the day. There are games and books in the sitting room. Outside there is a traditional stone oven for pizzas and roasting food.
If you like walking it is a perfect place to spend a holiday, (www.walking-pelion.blogspot.co.uk plus several more websites extolling the loveliness of the walks). Many of the old goat tracks (kalderimi) have been cleared and are now pretty well marked all over the peninsula.
The beaches, tavernas and people are wonderful. Being a peninsula, Pelion has a choice of the protected beaches in the Gulf and the more dramatic coastline of the Aegean. Amazingly we discover new beaches all the time. There is a fabulous array of beaches, many sandy for children. Even though Pelion is the holiday destination for many Greeks in August it never has a feeling of being crowded.
In Metochi itself there is one “shop”, and each day the baker and the “greengrocer” visit the village, with various other sellers (including fish) passing through. Argalasti is the local town with several shops, selling locally produced organic goods/olive oil/wine,etc. a supermarket, butcher, daily fish vans, atm etc. plus a Saturday market, and of course, bars and tavernas. Argalasti is about 7 minutes away in the car, but you can walk there (25 minutes). There are many villages to explore.
Flights go to our local city, Volos, plus to Athens and Thessaloniki. Do email me if you would like more information about how to get there, costs of staying there, or if you would like me to send more pictures.
Googling ‘newspaper articles about Pelion’ will give you information and recommendations from the Guardian, Sunday Times, Independent and Daily Telegraph!
