A Very Special Supper in the Garden
Posted:5 August 2016
A week ago the Garden House hosted a very special ‘supper in the garden’ – a delicious meal of Ethiopian and Kurdistan dishes cooked by three women who came to Brighton as refugees only a few years ago – and who happen to be great cooks!
The delicious meal was cooked by Makida Walleye, Rubar Qadir and Ganat Endashew – and the evening raised £740 after expenses (which included paying our wonderful chefs!), so was a huge success. The money raised went to the Migrant English Project in Brighton who provide free English lessons for refugees as well as a free meal which they take turns in cooking.

Some months ago we watched a screening of the film ‘Tasting My Future’ made by GH friend Cathy Maxwell and her colleague Sylvie Collier. The film traces the progress of a group of women refugees for whom the language of food has brought unity, friendship and a way forward – and was voted Best Documentary Film in the 24th Chichester International Film Festival. Do look out for it.
