We are delighted to invite bookbinder and book restorer Holly Smith to the Garden House. Holly is a Brighton-based craftswoman whose work focuses on marrying the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional bookbinding with contemporary design.
In this practical workshop you will learn how to make your own A5 notebook using the sewn board structure. This is a simple bookbinding structure that is designed to allow the book to open completely flat so that it can sit happily in your lap making it great for writing and sketching.
You will learn about different elements of bookbinding as well as terminology for the different parts of the book. The book you create will have a book cloth spine and decorative paper covers, which you can choose from a selection that Holly will bring to the class.
All the materials used will be very high or archival quality so you know your book will be built to last!
Each skill or technique will be demonstrated and supervised, but you will be required to use a craft knife for trimming the book cloth and paper so please keep this in mind.
Cost: £90 – to include a delicious vegetarian lunch and refreshments
Date: Thursday 28 May, 10am to 4.30pm
