Gabriella Rizzello and Molly Kyte live in Central Brighton and met in Summer 2015 whilst working at a Brighton Gelateria. Gabriella was the Gelato Chef and Molly the Shop Manager. As both were originally from the West Country they hit it off straight away, then finding out they had both lost their mums at a young age from cancer and diabetes brought them even closer together.
Gabriella and Molly
After two years of too much gelato (!), Molly and Gabriella decided to change their lifestyles, look after their bodies and adopt a Vegan lifestyle. A few months later they had set up their food business Planted, and they haven’t looked back since!
Gabriella says: “Planted is all about vegetables. We love them! We plan our menus by writing a list of all the vegetables that are in season that particular month and create dishes that complement them. We love growing vegetables that you can’t find easily at the greengrocers particularly, wild chicory, which is popular in Puglia, Italy”, adding “Planted’s aim is to host more pop up events and show guests that eating vegetables is far from boring”.
What is it you think special about vegan food?
We both used to think that vegan food was bland, boring and restrictive, but we were so wrong! Since being vegan we feel like a whole new world of food has opened up to us, and it’s all so delicious! Instead of feeling restricted you feel liberated by not having the same meals each week, we’re more creative and try new things. And all this comes with feeling healthier and happier, not to mention the positive environmental factors.
Do you use organic ingredients?
Yes, wherever possible. We get our vegbox from Hankam organics who we are big fans of. We always use organic flour as we think that’s really important. We also grow some of our own veg organically. This year the organic seeds we got from Gabriella’s Uncle in Puglia have taken off!
How often do you hold your pop ups? Always different venues around Brighton, or further afield?
We try and hold our pop ups once a month, and would love to host more. The Garden House is the perfect location for us as it ties in with our plant theme! Our guests can enjoy a lovely stroll through the garden with their welcome drink and admire the beautiful flowers and veg. We’d love to do them further a field in the future, with Bristol being top of the list as it’s a place close to our hearts. To join our next event at the Garden House on 26 August, BOOK ONLINE.
Planted is such a great idea, what do you love most about your new venture?
We love the freedom it gives us. We’ve always wanted to run our own business, and when we met last year it felt like perfect timing. Cooking (and eating) is our passion so it’s an amazing feeling working on something you believe in everyday.
Seeing people enjoying an evening that we’ve created is also really special!
